Bayerischer Yacht Club wins BMW Club Cup.

Skipper Rudolf Houdek and his crew won the inaugural BMW Club Cup for the Bayerischer Yacht Club (BYC). This club championship was contested during the weekend in co-operation with the Verein Seglerhaus am Wannsee (VSaW) on Berlin's Lake Wannsee. The most successful yachting clubs of the current season qualified for the regatta, with the criteria being that club members needed to have scored a podium place in an international class in a world championship event, or finished in the top three in an Olympic class in a world or European championship, or the ISAF World Cup.

Beside the revelling in the title “Best German sailing Club”, the Bayerischer Yacht Club can look forward to a BMW X5, which BMW has loaned to the club for a year. In addition, the VSaW donated a floating trophy.

“We had an extremely successful inaugural BMW Club Cup. All teams sailed very sportingly to deliver thrilling races. We are convinced the BMW Club Cup will become an important fixture on the German regatta calendar. For next year we intend further developing the format together with our partner Markus Wieser,” said Magnus Wiese, Head of Events, Exhibitions and Sport Marketing BMW Deutschland. “It provided a fitting farewell to the 2011 German sailing season, and now we hold thumbs for a successful campaign for German crews and in particular our BMW teams during the Olympic qualifiers in Perth.”

Dragon Class world vice-world champion and European champion Markus Wieser, too, was positive: “The first edition of the BMW Club Cup attracted an array of good clubs, and, above all, good sailors. We were able to stage all eight planned races under particularly favourable conditions.”
