The most successful yachting clubs of the current season qualified for the regatta, with the criteria being that club members needed to have scored a podium place in an international class in a world championship event, or finished in the top three in an Olympic class in a world or European championship, or the ISAF World Cup. Skipper Matthias Unger's team from Münster finished on the same points (two second places), but the better individual finish was enough to give the crew from Berlin the win.
