The most distinguished offshore race in the Med.

The Giraglia Rolex Cup is the Mediterranean’s oldest and most distinguished offshore race – it celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2013: Italian yachtsman Beppo Croce – father of Carlo Croce, current president of World Sailing and the Yacht Club Italiano – and French yachtsman René Levainville – president of the French Sailing Federation – met in a small bistro in Paris in 1953, where they came up with the idea of organising a regatta between the two countries. The race has provided a harmonious link between the French and Italian sailing community since its conception in 1953. After three days of inshore racing in elegant and artistic Saint-Tropez, around 200 yachts of over 30 feet in length line up for the offshore race, which takes the yachts 243 nautical miles from Saint-Tropez to the grand seaport of Genoa. The rounding of the Giraglia Rock is an iconic moment for every sailor, as it marks the turn to the finish.
The race is organised by Yacht Club Italiano in conjunction with Société Nautique de Saint-Tropez and Yacht Club de France.

The iconic regatta takes its name from an isolated cliff formation at the northern tip of Corsica, La Giraglia. Here stands a lighthouse, which must be rounded. On the one hand, this lighthouse became the race’s landmark. On the other hand, it heralds the final leg towards Genoa. Throughout the history of the Giraglia Race, to give the endurance race its official title, various different courses have been sailed. However, they have all had one thing in common: La Giraglia had to be rounded. Since 1998, a 243-nautic mile route from St. Tropez to Genoa has become the established course, which sophisticated maxi yachts take on every year.

The Giraglia Rolex Cup is about more than just the Giraglia Race and performance-oriented maxis: the regatta opens with a sprint race from Sanremo to Saint-Tropez. This is followed by spectacular inshore regattas in the picturesque by in St. Tropez. These also count towards the overall standings. One thing that makes the regatta particularly appealing is the fascinating mix of boats, from maxis and cruisers to historic yachts, which makes for some captivating images. The Giraglia Rolex Cup is also a social event, with exclusive evening events.

A legendary regatta.

The Giraglia Rolex Cup is not only one of the most traditional sailing events in the Mediterranean, it is one of the most beautiful regattas in the world. Fascinating start and finish points, a spectacular route and the friendly togetherness made the Giraglia Rolex Cup 2016 again a great sailing festival.
