Markus Wieser.

BMW Yachtsport Ambassador.

Markus Wieser is one of the best yachtsmen in Germany, sailing among the absolute world elite in various different classes of boat. In the Dragon class he is undoubtedly the most successful helmsman of recent years, while his achievements in large yachts include finishing runner-up in the World Championships in the TP52 in 2011. His step up to the 5.5mR class in January 2013 also produced immediate success: a new class – a new World Championship title. In 2010, 2012 and 2013 he was crowned the top sailor in Germany courtesy of victories at the Championship of Champions. His outstanding performances and personality make him an ideal ambassador for BMW Yachtsport as an opinion former and co-initiator of various activities.

Markus Wieser lives with his family by the Starnberger See (Lake Starnberg) to the south of Munich. He was already sailing on his father’s small cabin cruiser at the ripe old age of four. As a youngster, he tasted success for the first time together with his brother Franz in the Vaurien junior class. After taking his Abitur (the German equivalent of A-levels) in 1984, he switched to the Flying Dutchman. Wieser stuck with this class until it was withdrawn as an Olympic class in 1992. From 1990 onwards Markus Wieser turned his attention to big boats and match racing, a sailing discipline that demands both teamwork and tactical nouse.

In recent years, the BMW Yachtsport Ambassador has primarily made his name in the Dragon class, celebrating numerous successes: four European Championship titles, two second places at the European Championships, two Gold Cup wins, and two silver medals at the World Championships speak for themselves. Markus Wieser was crowned World Champion in the 5.5mR class of the coast of Curaçao in 2013 – an achievement dubbed “Mission Possible”, as it was his very first regatta in this class. Only in October 2012 had he decided to fulfil his dream of sailing a modern 5.5 metre yacht.
